MFD Events (Games)

24 Challenge (8th)– Card game played with decks of cards in the 24 series. In this event 8th graders compete amongst themselves using cards from the Algebra/Exponents deck, Variables deck and the sets from the 7th grade 24 Challenge.

24 Challenge (7th)– Card game played with decks of cards in the 24 series. In this event 7th graders compete amongst themselves using cards from the Double Digits, Integers and Fractions/Decimals decks.

Battleship (7th/8th)A game of strategy, pitting two participants with the mission to locate and alternately take “shots” at each other’s ships. When one player takes a shot, the opposing player must announce whether it was a “hit” or not. If a “hit” is record, the player gets another shot. The name of the ship is not revealed until it is “sunk.” Watch the game description HERE.

(NEW) CHESS (7th/8th) – Single elimination bracket. There will be 10 minutes chess matches (similar to chess tournaments). The winner is defined by winning the match within the allocated time or the player that runs out of time loses the match. This is also referred to as “Blitz Chess”. Watch a game description HERE.

Equate (7th)Game similar to Scrabble that uses equations instead of words. All students receive the same copy of a game board with an existing equation or two. They will also receive the same nine new tiles to make a new equation on the board, trying to score maximum points on one play. There will be as many rounds as time permits. Sudoku (7th/8th)Sudoku is a logic game in which a student is given 9 x 9 square grid with the varying amount of numbers between 1 and 9 randomly scattered on the grid. Watch a video description HERE.

Tea Party Relay (8th -Compacted IM1) – (No Calculators) – This is a team event in which each school will enter one team composed of three players. The contest will consist of six 6-minute rounds of 3 questions per round with a short break in between. These problems are designed to be challenging, involving topics such as pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry.

Tri – Team Attack (7th/8th) – A problem-solving event for a prearranged three-person team from the same school chosen from Grades 7 and 8. Students may compete in Tri-Team Attack more than one year. Questions do not involve high-level math skills as much as persistence in figuring out multiple-step or guess– and– check strategies.

Win, Lose, or Draw (7th/8th)– A mathematical Pictionary game for a two-person team, chosen from Grade 7 and/or  Grade 8.

These events are accuracy and time-based events centered on grade level difficulty; Math Wits (8th) for students enrolled in Compacted Integrated Math I, Math Bowl (7th) for students enrolled in Compacted Math 7th, Mad Hatter (8th) for students enrolled in Integrated Math 8, and Mad Hatter (7th) for students enrolled in Integrated Math 7.

Math Wits (8th)(Being updated) This event requires 8th grade advanced math skills. It is an accuracy and time-based event geared for students enrolled in Compacted Integrated Math I (8th grade). Students will have 60 minutes to answer as many math problems as possible using their iPads – Assessment platrom will offer the assessment environment (TBD). If a question/problem is skipped, the student cannot get back to complete it at a later time. Students will need their own calculators. The first session (60 min) will identify the top three students that will face each other in a Math Wits Finale.

  • Math Wits Finale(Being updated)Accuracy and time-based math solving skills. Top three Math Wits students will answer as many math problems as possible within 15 minutes using their iPads. Assessment platform will offer the assessment environment (TBD). If a question/problem is skipped, the student cannot get back to complete it a later time. No calculators allowed.

Math Bowl (7th) (Being updated)This is an accuracy and time-based event geared for students enrolled in Compacted Math 7th.
