SUHSD Summer CyberCamp

Join a fun, hands-on learning experience on cybersecurity principles that are relevant and applicable to everyday life. At SUHSD Summer CyberCamp, students will learn the importance of cyber safety and how to protect their personal devices and information from outside threats.

Dates: June 27 to July 1st, 2016 (5 days)

Time: 10am to 2pm
Locations: Eastlake High School & Montgomery High School

Registration is open only for SUHSD students. If you are interested in participating, please complete the online pre-registration form, print and get the signatures on the parent permission slips, and turn them into your school counselor. You will receive an email with confirmation of your participation by May 30, 2016. Space is limited! First-come-first-served.

CyberCamp content:

Module 1: Introduction to the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, cybersecurity career opportunities, cyber ethics, online safety, how computers work, and cyber threats.

Module 2 : Cybersecurity principles, virtual machines, basic Windows security policies and tools, and account management.

Module 3: Windows file protections, auditing and monitoring, introduction to Server 2008 and introduction to Linux.

Module 4: Ubuntu terminology and concepts, basic graphical user interface security, basic command line security, and intermediate Ubuntu security.

Module 5: Mock CyberPatriot competition.

Congratulations Amy Eppert! -Pinnacle Scholarship Winner-

AmmyEppertAmy Eppert, Hilltop High School student recently awarded with Athena San Diego Pinnacle Award.

Amy’s school activities have included vice president of the Robotics Club to student leader of the Imperial Beach Reef Project. She also co-created and co-taught a STEM course for incoming freshman, and created and taught an after school program called “Math Buddies” for elementary school students. She was also a member of the Academic Decathlon team. Amy plays the Celtic harp for hospice care, autistic and Down syndrome children, and Alzheimer’s patients. Amy plans to major in biology and minor in computational science and Point Loma Nazarene University and continue on to earn a PhD from UCSD.

SUHi students Place 1st at Robot Programming Competition @ SDCC

Students eagerly approached their assigned stations, reviewed the competition’s instructions and judging criteria, and began playing with the software; Choregraphe.  Dean Rose LaMuraglia of San Diego City College’s School of Business, Information Technology and Cosmetology kicked off the event with a presentation on careers in technology, aiming to inspire this next generation of programmers. She concluded her presentation with a demonstration in which Patrick, the Nao Robot, spoke to the students and danced to Michael Jackson’s, “Thriller.”DSC_0087

Students participated in a brief tutorial and received instruction on the software then teams were tasked with a series of challenges: they had to program the robot to creatively introduce their teams to an audience, to dance along to popular music, and to most importantly, have fun and learn!  The teams dedicated 2 hours and 30 minutes to programming Patrick (Nao Robot).

DSC_0057The judges assessed students based on a defined set of criteria: the use of fluid dance movements, complexity of the dance sequence, the entertainment factor, and the ability of the students to take into consideration Patrick’s limitations when programming him.

DSC_0088Emmanuel Hidalgo from Castle Park High School won a raffled gaming console.

All of the students walked away with SeaWorld passes, Xbox music passes donated by The Microsoft Store, Otterbox cell phone cases donated by the OtterCares Foundation, and Rubio’s gift cards.

Hayley Salazar (ORHS) AFA San Diego Teacher of the Year

Hayley Salazar (ORHS) science teacher was recently named 2016 AFA San Diego Chapter 118 Teacher of the Year! 

The announcement was made by Gene Alfaro, Vice President for Aerospace Education,  San Diego Chapter 118 of the Air Force Association indicating that Ms. Salazar’s credentials as a STEM teacher  supports the STEM goals of the Air Force Association.

HayleySalazarMs. Salazar is recognized by implementing a dynamic award winning robotics program at Otay Ranch High School, instilling the values of “gracious professionalism” and “co-opertition” into the hearts of her team members, and for taking a leadership role in the expansion of the robotics program in the SUHSD and in the county of San Diego.

SUHSD at Women’s Hackathon Event at CSU San Marcos

CSUSM women hackathon logoOn April 30, 2016 CSU San Marcos hosted a Women’s Hackathon Event. Sweetwater Union High School students were there! CSUSM Women Hackathon

  • Aseret Flores & Sarah Valencia (Sweetwater High School)
  • Amanda Castro, Emili Meyer, Ivy Nguyen, & Precious Lara (Olympian High School)

During the awards ceremony, Emily, Aseret, and Sarah (Team Pumas) earned an award for developing a game concept as part of a website to educate the public about the environment around jaguars. They won in the classification of originality and impact.

Amanda, Ivy, and Precious , (Team Rawr)  earned an award based on their concept for a website that followed most closely the theme about educating the public about Jaguars.  They wrote everything in English and in Spanish.

Mustang Robotics Team 507B to VEX WORLDS 2016

VEXWORLDSOn April 20-23, 2016, 2016 VEX Worlds took place at Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. A total of 1,017 teams from 31 different countries participated at the 2016 VEX World Championships. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this was the world’s largest robotics event ever held.

Mustang Robotics Team 507B from Otay Ranch High School represented SUHSD.

After three days of intense competition, team 507B placed 23rd in their division placing them in the top 100 VEX high school teams in the world! They also won a tablet and a phone on a side video contest competition. GREAT JOB MUSTANG ROBOTICS!

2016 San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup FINALS -results-

CONGRATULATIONS TO EASTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL, EASTLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL

SDMayorsCUPThe San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup Finals took place on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at UCSD Supercomputer Center. SUHSD had three teams participating; Castle Park High School, Eastlake High School, and Eastlake Middle School.

The competition was full of surprises for all participants. At the end of the event, Castle Park High School took home 10th place, Eastlake Middle School 9th, and Eastlake High School 5th. A total of 125 teams representing 71 different schools competed at this year’s San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup. A very respectful accomplishment for Sweetwater Union High School District.

During the award banquet, each of our teams was awarded $700 for making it to the finals and the students and teachers were given the opportunity to attend a Cyber Bootcamp this summer for free! Watch a video that features the competition HERE.

Chula Vista High School takes 1st Place at Northrop Grumman’s Innovation Challenge

Last Saturday, April 30, 2016,  Chula Vista High School’s Physics Club Spartan Physics Force (SPF) competed in a county wide competition organized by NorthrCHULA01op Grumman at one of their facilities against other schools from around the county.

This year’s challenge was to build a Hover Craft that could accelerate, maneuver through an obstacle course with payload carrying. The competition was scored on 3 aspects; a preliminary design report (PDR), a presentation, and obstacle course performance.

This was SPFs 5th time competing in the challenge. In past years, they have taken three 2nd place finishes and one 3rd place finish. This time around, SPF  finally took the top spot FIRST PLACE! First place receives a $1,250 for their club or program.

Students: Angel Delgado, Arlette Flores, Omar Garcia, Diego Amador, Andres Perez, Ashely Curtis, and Benny De La Rosa.

Mentor Engineer: Yesse Tanner (yes, that is correct, Mr. Scott Tanner’s daughter -former ASB Dean at CVHS and a graduate of Tom Dunn’s Physics Program at Bonita Vista HS.)
