PRESS RELEASE – January 25, 2021

New York – The College Board announced recipients of its annual AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, recognizing schools for achieving gender equality in AP® Computer Science A (CSA) and/or AP Computer Science Principles (CSP). Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have taken a critical step toward closing the gender gap in the field of computer science, where women have historically been underrepresented.

Today the College Board recognized 1,119 schools for achieving either 50% or higher female examinee representation in one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population, during the 2019-20 school year. That’s an increase of nearly 37% over the 818 schools recognized during the 2018-19 school year. Of these schools, 831 earned the award for AP CSP, 232 for AP CSA, and 56 had the distinction of receiving the award for both courses.

Congratulations to Shannon Yeow, Otay Ranch High School student who received an Honorable mention (AiC) by the National NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Each year, U.S. high school students in grades 9 through 12 who self-identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary are eligible to receive recognition for their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education. This year, 40 winners and 360 honorable mentions were selected from more than 4,288 amazing, talented young applicants. Continue reading entire article HERE

“Encouraging young women’s interest in technology careers is critical: our workforce needs their creativity and unique perspectives to produce technology that is as broad and innovative as the population it serves,” said NCWIT CEO and Co-founder Lucy Sanders.

NCWIT is a non-profit community that convenes, equips, and unites change leader organizations to increase the influential and meaningful participation of girls and women — at the intersections of race/ethnicity, class, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, and other historically marginalized identities — in the field of computing, particularly in terms of innovation and development. The commitment – a few hours several Saturdays from October 2019 to February, 2020. You will be trained to put your life experience into practice.

If you are interested and you can volunteer some of your Saturdays please contact me. You will have fun, and you will be blessed seeing what our students can do. Contact me Joe Amaro at  joseph.amaro@sweetwaterschools.org.
