Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference March 4, 2017

It’s that time again!  Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a non-profit annual conference aimed to interest girls, in grades 6th – 10th, in science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM).  Over the past decade, the San Diego chapter of EYH has introduced thousands of young girls to exciting STEM careers. Our conference offers hands-on workshops and activities organized by some of San Diego’s best and brightest professionals in STEM industries.

To excite and prepare students for college life, it is hosted at the University of San Diego (USD). Our ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges.  Parents are also encouraged to attend their own workshops that focus on college applications, financial aid, etc.

Student and parent registration is now open! Please visit: www.EYHSanDiego.org

Fee waivers are available for those who request them during the application process.  Flyers are available for download on our website as well.

This year’s conference is on Saturday, March 4, 2017, hosted at the University of San Diego.

We would love to see your school in attendance!

Thank you,

– Expanding Your Horizons, San Diego

Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute and the Generation Google Scholarship

Greetings from Google!

Thinking of studying computer science? Apply to Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute and Generation Google Scholarship!

At Google, we believe information should be universally accessible. Our education and scholarship programs aim to inspire and help students become future leaders in computing and technology by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from entering these fields.  We are now accepting applications for the Generation Google Scholarship and Computer Science Summer Institute. Read more below and apply today!

Generation Google Scholarship

The Generation Google Scholarship helps aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the 2017-2018 school year. As part of the scholarship, current high school seniors who are entering their first year of university in 2017-2018 will be required to attend Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) in the summer of 2017.

Please visit www.google.com/students/generationgoogle for more information and to apply!

Computer Science Summer Institute

Google is invested in increasing the enrollment and retention of computer science students. With this in mind, we’re hosting our 10th annual Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI), a three-week introduction to computer science for graduating high school seniors with an interest in technology — especially students from historically underrepresented groups in the field. This year, we will offer two types of sessions, day-camp and residential:

Day-camp sessions are for students who live within 90 minute commute of the respective offices. Students will be provided with a travel stipend and expected to commute into the Google offices for each day of CSSI. Day-camps locations and dates are:

  • Mountain View, CA: July 10th – July 28th
  • Chicago, IL: July 17th – Aug 4th
  • New York City, NY: July 17th – Aug 4th
  • Atlanta, GA: July 10th – July 28th
  • Los Angeles: July 10th – July 28th
  • Pittsburgh, PA: July 17th – August 4

Residential sessions are for students outside the mileage distance of day-camps. Student housing and transportation will be provided. Residential locations and dates are:

  • Cambridge, MA: July 9th – July 29th
  • Seattle, WA: July 9th – July 29th

CSSI is not your average summer camp. It’s an intensive, interactive, hands-on and fun program that seeks to inspire the tech leaders and innovators of tomorrow by supporting the study of computer science, software engineering, and other closely related subjects. As CSSI students, you will learn programming fundamentals directly from Google engineers, get an inside look at some of Google’s most exciting, emerging technologies, and even design and develop your very own application with fellow participants that you will showcase to Googlers in local offices.

We are looking for students eager to spend a few weeks immersed in the Google life – tackling interesting technical problems, working collaboratively and having fun. We want students to leave empowered, heading into their first year of college armed with a unique learning experience that can only be found at Google. The program is open to all qualified high school seniors, and is committed to addressing diversity in the field of computer science. Students who are a member of a group that is historically underrepresented in the technology industry are encouraged to apply.

Please visitg.co/cssi for more information and to apply!

Application deadline: March 2, 2017. Final decisions will be announced by late April.

Have questions? Feel free to contact us at cssi@google.com or generationgoogle@google.com.

Guitar-Building (STEM) Courses at San Diego City College

GUITAR-BUILDING (STEM) COURSES   Flyer HERE

The San Diego City College Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) is partnering with the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program (MFET) to offer a 3-part approach to allowing high school students earn college credits while still attending high school.

Part 1 allows students to attend classes at City College during their junior or senior year:

San Diego City College is offering FREE Guitar kits as part of a STEM Electric Guitar-Building Program to high school students next semester. Each student successfully completing the program will earn 4 College Credits.

The class will meet each Saturday in the City College Technology Building, Room T-113 from 10:15 AM to 1:20 PM beginning February 4th, and ending with a Guitar Jam & Photo Session on May 27th.

The STEM Guitar-Building course is part of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MFET) Program. The 4 College Credits earned can be applied to a Certificate of Performance, Certificate of Achievement, and/or an AS Degree in MFET.

High schools can choose to implement Part 1 only, Part 1 and 2, or all three parts, Part 1, 2, & 3.

Part 2 allows teachers to attend a STEM Guitar-Building workshop at San Diego City College next summer to learn how to apply STEM Guitar-Building in their high school classroom:

The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States.  The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.

Part 3 allows high schools to implement a STEM Guitar-Building program at their high school similar to the program at City College:

San Diego City College’s MFET & CACT faculty and staff will partner to help high schools duplicate the STEM Guitar-Building Program at their school.

Credits earned at the high school will transfer to San Diego City College, and can be used toward a Certificate of Performance, Certificate of Achievement, and/or an AS Degree in MFET.

For more information please contact Professor Kenny Heifner at kheifner@sdccd.edu, or Ed Smith (Smitty), Deputy Director of the San Diego City College CACT, esmith@sdccd.edu.
